New .au domain for Australian businesses

by Tim Lawrence | Mar 13, 2020

Australian domain names will soon have a brand new variant that includes only the .au suffix.

This means domains such as dorchesterit.au or even tim.au will be up for grabs. Thanks to lower barriers to registering these new domains, any Australian resident or company has the right to claim a .au domain name when they roll out early this year.

That means any company that missed out on their preferred .com.au, .org.au or .net.au domain name can try for the .au instead. There will be three stages to this process, initially prioritising existing domain holders to avoid them losing their domains, and prevent stealing and ransoming. The final stage is a free-for-all, with .au domains available to any business or person resident in Australia.

While this opens up new opportunities to claim a name, the flip side is that competitors may take a similar variant to your existing domain name, trading on your reputation or even directing traffic back to their own site.

The launch date for the new domains is yet to be announced, but if you'd like more information or want us to apply for your .au domain when it becomes available, please contact us on 1300 796 788 or email us at help@dorchesterit.com.au
