Tips for building a new website

by Jason Fletcher | Mar 25, 2015

So, you want to get a website up, but don’t know where to start, or what you need in order to get online. There are two items that are essential for any website, and another two items that will help to make your website stand out from everyone else. We will look at each of these in turn and start with the essentials.

 Web hosting

The first thing you need to do is find a webhosting company that can host the site for you.  A web hosting company is what allows individuals and organizations to make their website accessible via the World Wide Web. Webhosting companies provide space on a server owned or leased for use by clients, as well as providing internet connectivity. The servers that a web hosting company use are typically located within a data centre.

One thing to remember with regard to web hosting is that this tends to be a monthly fee. Somewhat cheap but still something that will need to be calculated into your monthly costs.

Domain name

The domain name is what will allow people to locate your website, without this no one will find you (unless you give them the IP address that is, but let’s be fair no one can remember this). In simple terms, a domain name is a human readable address that points to the I.P address of the server that the website is sitting on (the web hosting company’s server).  As with web hosting, this is an ongoing fee and is generally paid yearly. Once again, this is relatively cheap.

Web designer

The web designer is the person who will work with you in order to design a website that you love, and will also stand out from the crowd. The web designer is a very important aspect when it comes to creating the website that you want. Just because you think you have an artistic bone doesn’t mean you can do what these people do. They have spent years learning about design and what works/doesn’t work. It is highly advisable that you do seek out a professional to do this for you.

Just as a side note, your web designer is not your programmer. This person should not be the person who codes the end product, and if they tell you they can do it then you should look elsewhere. Their role in this project is to design the site, not write the code that turns all those pretty images into a working site.

As with the web designer, the programmer plays a very important role in creating a web site for you. Generally speaking, you will never have to deal with this person directly. Instead, the web designer will be the one that needs to deal with the programmer. The programmer is the person that is responsible in turning your design into the actual website. The designer will hand the programmer the design and tell them to code it, which they will then proceed to do.

As with the side note on the web designer, the programmer is not your designer. Their skill levels don’t lie within this area. If the programmer tries to tell you that they can do the design for you, then you should look for another programmer. Their only role in this project is to write the code that turns the design into something that will work within a browser.
